Opening Statement

The relevancy of your essay is stated here.  In the first paragraph you will give only the most relevant information.  The final sentences of this first paragraph usually contains what is known as the thesis statement.  Hopefully your English teacher at some point has explained what a thesis statement contains.

For most students the most challenging part of an essay is the opening paragraph.  I can remember in my early college days of pondering over a term paper because I could not get started.  Remember the statement we made after reading Page 2: The purpose of this paper is to ...    If we write this statement correctly from the start we should not get throttled at the beginning of our paper because we know what we want to write about.  Right?

Outline

To prevent getting stuck on your essay write an outline.  As you plan and write your essay outline think in these terms:

  1. Tell them what I am going to tell them.
  2. Tell them.
  3. Tell them what I told them.

Following the above simple three steps have never failed me in putting together an essayr.  To page 4.
